Foie Gras Gourmet supports the AVSF association

Foie Gras Gourmet has decided to support AVSF (Agronomes et Vétérinaires Sans Frontières), is an association that works for international solidarity recognized as public utility, engaged in supporting smallholder farming since 1977.

 

 

 

 

AVSF provides to farming communities threatened by exclusion and poverty offering them professional skills in agriculture, livestock farming and animal health.

 

AVSF supports farmers to allow them to have access to better living conditions, sustainably manage the natural resources upon which they depend, and to take better care of their livestock.

 

 

Livestock farming, a crucial activity

 

In developing countries, livestock farming supports 600 million people and can represent up to a third of the national economic production of certain countries.

 

Complementary to agricultural activity, it provides additional income and the use of non-cultivable areas: for example, 70% of the means of subsistence in mountainous or arid or semi-arid regions come from livestock.

 

As for pastoral farming, which relies on animal seasonal mobility, it supports 200 million people and is practiced on nearly a third of the earth's surface in fragile ecosystems. Pastoralism is part of an agroecological approach: it uses fewer inputs, pollutes less than sedentary livestock, preferable for preserving natural resources, fertilizes the soil, enhances soil properties with crop residues and is often very productive.

 

 

               

 

 

Threats of factory farming

 

Factory farming from northern countries still massively exports low-cost meat and powdered milk to southern countries, competing directly with local farmers. In addition, southern countries are not spared by the development of industrial farming practices, that cause animal suffering, deteriorate our environment through over consumption and fossil fuels, playing a big part in climate change due to deforestation.

 

In order to improve breeding techniques, AVSF provides farmers with their skills and knowledge in farm animal welfare, the protection of domestic and wild animal biodiversity, the preservation and conservation of animals and promotion of traditional knowledge.

 

Foie Gras Gourmet is happy to support AVSF, which allows farmers to live off their land and their herds, while preserving the environment and promoting animal welfare.
