Clos Haut-Peyraguey: history and terroir
Symphonie de Haut-Peyraguey is the second wine of Clos Haut-Peyraguey, a Premier Grand Cru Classé of Sauternes. Separated from Yquem by a small valley, this estate was established in 1879, when the owners of Château Peyraguey sold the highest part of their property to a Parisian pharmacist named Grillon.
In 1914, the estate, now known as Clos Haut-Peyraguey, was purchased by the Pauly and Ginestet families. The Paulys became sole owners in 1937 and kept it until 2012, when it was acquired by Bernard Magrez. The 21-hectare terroir, located at the top of the Bommes hill, is first-rate: well-drained sandy gravel soils over clay.
The 2018 vintage
This Sauternes has a golden hue and aromas of peach, apricot and candied citrus, with a hint of honey. On the palate, its sweetness is light and balanced by lovely freshness, leading to a lively finish.
James Suckling’s review
“A fruity and pretty white with light sweetness and fruitiness. Medium body, delicious fruit and a fresh finish.”
Why choose a magnum?
The 1.5 L magnum format limits the wine’s exposure to oxygen and protects it better from temperature fluctuations: it develops more slowly and is ideal for long-term aging. It is also perfect for large gatherings and festive meals.
Pairings and serving
A natural companion to duck or goose foie gras, Symphonie de Haut-Peyraguey also pairs well with blue cheeses such as Roquefort, poultry in cream sauce, and desserts made with apricots or yellow fruits. We recommend serving it between 8 and 10 °C.
